However, normally, wouldn't it be better to express her 'hidden feelings for her son' through narration rather than saying it to him in dialogue? Once it becomes dialogue, it feels too expository, and then the son has to respond, which feels forced. They should have kept the dialogue to a minimum, focused on the intimacy, and used narration to fill in the gaps.
