I consider his films 'Love in the Ancient Capital' and 'Love of a Rickshaw Man' to be on par with an Academy Award for pornographic AV. He is a rare director who truly understands how to depict sexuality as a human experience—something secret, sometimes shameful, yet passionate. While there are successors like Kyosuke Murayama or Mochizuki, none can portray sexuality with such variety; they run out of ideas too quickly. If Director Gunji is still active, I would love to see a new film from him.

An erotic theater piece by the visionary director Gunji Kawasaki, featuring a playboy traveling salesman as the protagonist. The setting is a mountain village in the Kanto region during the Showa 40s (1965-1974). Kenzo Ishii, a medicine peddler from Toyama, spends his time traveling across the country while indulging in endless sexual encounters with maids at the inns he stays at. This time, after enjoying an affair with a newlywed maid named Noriko (Rua Maino), he happens upon a scene of a frustrated housewife (Rie Watase) having sex outdoors at a client's farm. He returns to the inn and engages in another tryst with Noriko in the public bath. A month later, while peddling in a different village, Kenzo stays at a local prestigious home. While tending to the 'lady of the house' (Chinami Sakai, Shiki) who suddenly complains of a stomach ache, he discovers a 'beauty mark' on her inner thigh—the telltale sign of a 'legendary lover.' His lustful blood boiling, he sleeps with her right then and there, and has one more round the next morning before leaving. It is truly a laid-back, leisurely film that reeks of the Showa era.
