Because he's acting out 'lethargic excitement,' his breathing is heavy but he doesn't sound winded, which creates a strange, unnatural vibe. Since they're using amateurs for both the male and female roles, maybe they should avoid making them recite 'scripted lines,' regardless of the casual dialogue.
