As a fan of Director Shohei Shima's work, I was a bit surprised. Director Shima, usually a master of talk and setting the mood to get women in the mood, was quiet and barely smiled; the vibe felt off right from the start. At the beginning, there's a sudden scene of the woman bathing alone, which wasn't erotic at all (it was literally just a bath...), and it felt so unlike him that I was left wondering '???'. Then, the scene abruptly cuts to a random BBQ on a terrace. When they moved to the room, I expected to finally see some real action, but whether it was the poor mic quality or the director's own lack of energy, the mumbled, half-hearted chatter led into the sex in a way that just didn't build any excitement. There was no signature erotic banter during the act, no 'post-game analysis' while wiping up, and the night just passed by without that feeling of watching a classic Shima production. Even the morning sex was lackluster and failed to spark anything. Only in the final scene at a different location did he seem to regain a bit of his usual touch, but it was still a dry, detached performance that ended the two-hour runtime. Even though the Japanese-style beauty with the large chest wasn't bad at all, the usual drive to bring out her charm was missing, and it just ended on a low note. Is he okay? Is he tired, Director Shima? All in all, it was a hard one to recommend.
