But in this work, I feel like Mako broke away from her previous image with her own unique charm. First of all, she’s finally achieved a ‘mature visual’ with a bit of healthy weight gain, wrinkles around her eyes that suit her age, and a softer jawline. This ripeness, while still retaining her original beauty, is something to be coveted by old fans and newcomers alike. And the weakness in her acting, which I was worried about, actually feels like a positive in this work. In stories where the opponent is an amateur, you often see the actress taking the initiative from the start, acting like she’s ‘teaching’ them. But in this work, Mako is consistently polite to the male character, sometimes even approaching him with a lover’s tenderness, which enhances the work. It would have been difficult for Ryoko, with her fierce acting, to convey this nuance. Murakami Ryoko hasn’t released a new work in seven years and is essentially considered retired. I’ve been feeling a sense of loss, but I’m happy to see Oda Mako transform in such a desirable way. This is a masterpiece, for real!
